In December 1999 my best mate Bas and I, two dudes from Holland, took a trip to NYC. We did all the touristy things, including checking out the World Trade Center. However we picked a rainy, cloudy day for this, so we weren't actually able to go up the WTC. We ended up walking around the Twin Towers and visiting the WTC shopping mall.

Man I wish I could have been a true African...I would love to have been able to be apart of such a rich culture....I know I am black and come from the ancestors but it is not the same. And if I didn't do my own research i would never know about our culture. I am proud to be black.

She may be about 70 years old but she still can do her thing well. So when writing my Student Workbook for AQA GCSE Music for ZigZag Education, I knew that Miriam Makeba deserved to be in the African Music section so that this generation of UK musicians can be aware of her unique, expressive authentic African music which has transcended time and space. God bless you Mama Africa.

I loved the strong, precise pata pata dance. My daughters and I tried it, but we could not make it look so smooth and effortless, no matter how many times we played the song. So much fun trying, though.

Her being makes me cry. I was born -66 in Stockholm, the same year she sang there. I listened to her as a child and loved the music. The sheer musicality, perfection and struggle she stands for, or stood for, makes me want to be a better human being! I play her music for my 4 children. Not every singer gets the message across the world like she did.
